1st maths problem : Japanese flower

Japanese flower space

A gardener has to create a flower space with specific shapes for his town. He had got this idea :

(The four circles are in contact)

In the big circle into the triangle he’ll plant blue flowers, in the little circles he’ll plant roses ; and the triangle will be with yellow flowers. In the bigger circle he’ll plant some grass.

Finished sangaku

But he isn’t good at geometry ! He only thinks he must draw a right-angled triangle to start.

You have a circle C1 of centre O, with 10 cm diameter. AB is a diameter. Choose a point C on the circle. Here you have an example.

Right-angled triangle

1°) Explain why the triangle ABC is a right-angled triangle ?

2°) Help the gardener to finish the shape, and explain how you did it ?

3°) You have made a sangaku, it comes from Japan. Search more informations about it, and write it down. You can for examples say :

  • What did they appear ?
  • What are they made for ?
  • … etc…
  • You can try to draw other sangakus !
