FGM : 66 000 victims in UK
Nowadays, 66 000 girls and women have suffered from FGM (Female Genital Mutilation).
The mayor, Boris Johnson ,said the practice was ” absolutely intolerable”.
In London hospitals, 31 doctors said 44 000 people had been treated, but in reality just 20 % had been treated for FGM.
Between 2009 and 2013 , 795 victims of FGM were born in UK, it’s the second largest number of patients. In the world, 125 million girls and women are victims and this number continues to increase in 29 countries mainly in Africa, in the Middle East and Asia.
Before, the FGM was only done in African countries but now, more parents want to do this to their daughters to keep their virginity. They do the FGM when they are infant or beetwen 7 to 14 years old.
In the UK, young women receiving psychological counselling report feelings of betrayal by parents, regret and anger. It’s illegal to arrange for a child to be taken abroad for FGM. If caught, offenders face a large fine and a prison sentence of up to 14 years. If you are in contact with girls and women at risk to FGM, please call the police. It’s illegal and inhuman.
