WETLANDS : water is source of life

5-3 OJECTIVES OF THE PARTNERSHIP

– What are the concrete objectives of the partnership?

– Explain what subjects or problems you intend to address.

– What approach will you take to achieve your objectives?

1- Enable students to play an active part in their environmental training. The students themselves will ask for information, collect datas and produce a synthesis.

As a first step they will define their aim : the area in a wet zone

choice and delineation of the geographical area to be studied

social, cultural legal and environmental aspects taken into account

They can choose one or sveral areas within this space. These zones will be compared to show the various evolutions and the choices that have been made by local communities. Then pupils should take the different aspects into account.

geographical and historical aspects. Identification and delineation of a territory, its evolution and what is at stake.

Study of the landscape.

Importance of the site as a national heritage.

Environmental aspects: water quality, biodiversity, study of migratory birds.

Agricultural aspects : agrarian system in wetlands, management of wet lands.

Economical aspects : various types of local communities and what they aim at, their logic.

Cultural aspects : tales and legends linked to marshes.

These areas are submitted to high demand in Europe. Their surface has considerably diminished in the XXth century, and particularly over the last 40 years, with building works, embankment works and draining. Because they have different needs and opt for different choices, all users do not necessarily agree. Then it is essential to become aware of the value of these territories in order to protect them.

As a second step (throughout the second year)pupils will create a presentation of users, their functions, and positive or negative externalities that impact either on their environment or on the other users. This will also help them define common issues about the management of European wet zones (4th objective)

2- Make pupils from different European countries meet and communicate on wet zones in a foreign language. The pupils will have to learn specific vocabulary in a foreign language to describe the aspects of the wet zone they have chosen. But they will also have to comment upon the other partners’ reports on the blog.

3- Make young people aware of sustainable development through a socio-economical approach of a territory, its users, their conflicts and what is at stake.

4- Define common issues about the management of a European territory.

5- Support wet zones protection and understand their environment.
