EXERCISES – IMMIGRATION TO THE USA

1. Fill in the blanks with the missing verb in the right form of the simple past :

Isaac Berlin (1) was a Russian Jew. He (2) came from a poor family with six brothers and sisters. He (3) left Russia because of poverty and religious persecution.

He (4) arrived in America in 1892. His journey to New York (5) was terrible. He (6) had to stay at Ellis Island, the immigration station, for three days. Then, he (7) took a ferry to Manhattan where he (8) became a salesboy. He (9) was poor and (10) slept on potato bags. In 1906 he (11) married a poor hat maker.
