Elderly woman’s real-life ‘Up’ house finally faces the wrecking ball

  • Often-compared to the plot of the Pixar movie ‘Up’, home-owner Edith Macefield, 84, was offered $1 million in 2006 to vacate her house
  • She refused, wanting to stay in the home she had spent more than 50 years in, and developers were forced to build around her
  • Macefield became a reluctant folk hero and passed away two years later at home as she had wished
  • She left the house to one of the construction crew at the neighboring project who had looked after her
  • After he sold the house, the new owners were unable to make their plans work and the property was foreclosed
  • It is now up for auction and a new owner will likely knock it down due to its dilapidated state

El humorista Pedro Reyes muere a los 53 años

Con la muerte de Pedro Reyes (Tánger, 1961), de infarto de miocardio a los 53 años en Valencia, desaparece uno de los grandes cómicos españoles, el hombre que defendió el humor absurdo en tiempos más dados a la simplicidad. No fue el primero (Tip y Coll ya habían sembrado esa semilla en el imaginario televisivo español) ni el mejor —ese lugar del podio es para Faemino y Cansado—, pero su dúo con Pablo Carbonell, el mítico Pedro y Pablo, marcó en los ochenta a la generación de la EGB. Y fue gracias al ojo de la periodista de EL PAÍS Rosana Torres, que los fichó para el programa de televisión El carro de la farsa. Torres recuerda: “Eran unos disparates de seres, hacían un humor absurdo y muy inteligente que en aquellos años no se veía en la calle. Los descubrí en el Retiro, donde tras cada actuación pasaban la gorra”. Torres les dedicó un El carro de la farsa y así se hicieron populares.
