  1. When (time of the day) does the scene take place? -at night / in the middle of the night 
  2. In what year do you think this could take place? Justify – it could take place in 1940, or between 1939 and 1945 because it is during World War II. We can see bombers in the sky. 
  3. What can be heard? -we can hear bombing and an alarm.
  4. Who is doing it? -the German soldiers/ the Nazi 
  5. What is the characters’ reaction? – they panic, they are scared / they are panic-stricken
  6. What do they do? Why? -They leave – they flee – they hide
  7. What is the overall atmosphere? – dark/ gloomy – TENSE – terrifying  – chaotic – stressful

The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Train Station Scene)

  1. Where does the scene take place? (area + town) – The scene takes place at the train station in London
  2. Who is leaving? Why? -The children are going away / leaving London because the Nazi are attacking the capital city and it has become too dangerous to stay in London. 
  3. Where are they going? Explain. -They are going to the countryside (because it is safer); they will probably sttay with relatives until the war is over. 
  4. Who are the people staying on the platform? – They are families: parents with their children, many mothers.
  5. What is their reaction? Why? – They are crying because they have to part with their children and they don’t know when they will see them again. 
  6. Who does the eldest son notice before getting on the train? -He notices the young soldier / the army 
  7. What is this infamous historical period called? THE BLITZ

Fleeing to Narnia (Blitz)

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is an epic film, set in a breathtaking world at the limits of imagination. It tells the story of four siblings – Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter Pevensie – sent to live on the estate of a mysterious professor to escape the horrors of the WWII bombing of London. While playing hide-and-seek, the youngest child, Lucy, discovers the world of Narnia. She convinces her brothers and sister to journey through the open back of a magical wardrobe to travel to Narnia with her. Narnia, a once-peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs, and giants, has been cursed with eternal winter by the evil but beautiful White Witch, Jadis. Under the guidance of a noble and mystical ruler, the magnificent lion Aslan, the children fight to overcome Jadis’ powerful hold over Narnia in a spectacular, climactic battle destined to free Narnia from the icy spell forever.

Questions:

  1. The first target was the British airfields and radar stations outside of Britian’s cities.
  2. -Hitler wanted to destroy the businesses and shops to deprive the British of essential supplies (food, medecine, etc.)
    -Hitler also wanted to destroy the morale, or spirit and hopefulness of the British people.
  3. Blitz from the German word “blitzkrieg” means “lightning war”
  4. They were sent out of London into the countryside to escape the bombing and “live in safety”
  5. The Blitz ended on May 11, 1941
  6. “accurate” = the state of being correct/ exact/ precise
    “accuracy” enables to situate the film in a specific time (here, WWII), to make the setting (and the story) as REALISTIC as possible. Then, by creating an accurate beginning, people buy into the story more easily.
