Katy’s personality:

    • today: brave = courageous; independent; determined = strong-willed; strong; bossy; ambitious; resourceful; fearless; (self-) confident;
  2. a) To stress the idea that she was a different person in the past (and she is not like this anymore) Katy uses the locution “USED TO”.
    b) To talk about her personality TODAY, she keeps repeating “NOW” / “But I (got up)”
    c) In English, which words or phrases or grammar tools can be used to mark a difference (or, in this case, an evolution) between past and present?
    • USED TO
    • She HAS BECOME..
    • Comparaison:

      • less + adj court/long(than)
      • as + adj court/ long +as
    • Unlike = contrary to
    • not …. anymore
    • not … at all
  3. Let’s sum up: How has the singer evolved through this song?
    → Write a short paragraph using the words or phrases or grammar tools found in Q.2 c)

Katy Perry wrote a song to describe the evolution/ change in her personality:

She has become ambitious. She has become more independent. She used to be quiet. Now she is resourceful. She is not scared anymore. She uses the metaphor “rock the boat” to show that she was reserved and fearlful. But now she is not shy at all!

Unlike before, she is not well-behaved anymore. She is less weak and less vulnerable. She has become stronger. She is as strong as a lion.

We can also notice that the locution “used to” shows/emphasises that she was like that in the past, but now she is a completely different woman!
