Lesson 2 – Vivre entre générations
AMERICAN DINER (heading) par MBINTRODUCTION
I- ORAL sous forme de conversation à partir de 5 images en rapport avec le thème de la séquence.
1-THE RUNAWAY (picture)
What vision of diners does Rockwell’s illustration convey?
a) The scene takes place in a diner. We can see the stools, the coffee machine, the waiter behind the counter, and behind the waiter there is a blackboard with the menu of the day.
b) We can see a police officer sitting next to a kid/child/ boy at the counter. They are talking/ chatting together. The waiter who is smoking his cigarette, is looking at them and listening to them.
c) The policeman and the waiter (=they) look curious, caring, trustworthy, and kind. The waiter (=he) looks amused.
d) On the floor, we notice a little bundle on a stick: the little boy must have run away from home. Maybe he was grounded, or he had an argument with his parents and he decided to run away.
Or maybe he didn’t go to school = he skipped school !
e) With the smiling waiter and the kind-hearted police officer, the atmosphere looks COSY, SAFE and welcoming, friendly and homely. The diner is like a SHELTER for the little boy who can find protection, care and understanding there. Here, the waiter and the police officer are not scolding him (for running away), they are listening to him.
