To what extent did Roald Dahl modernise the tale of Little Red Riding Hood?
2) Compare Roald Dahl’s version with the traditional tale. Make sentences using contrary to/ unlike and whereas
→ The characters are the same in BOTH tales, but there is no hunter or woodcutter.
→ In Roald Dahl’s version, LRRH looks oldER THAN in the traditional tale.
→ In the original story LRRH is surprised by the wolf’s big teeth WHEREAS in this new version, she is surprised by his lovely furry coat.
→ Neither the wolf nor the grandma is lying in the bed, UNLIKE in the original tale.
→ CONTRARY TO the traditional tale, LRRH is MORE down-to-Earth and resourceful.
→ In the twisted tale, the wolf eats up Grandma. HOWEVER, in the original tale, he locks her in the cupboard.
→ INCONGRUITY=
-when LRRH takes a gun out of her knickers at the end!!! We did not expect a little girl to carry a gun while visiting her grandma!
-The characters seem to know the script in advance and the wolf gets angry/ mad when LR gives the wrong cue!
→ REVERSAL:
-LR kills the wolf, even if she is a little girl/ she is not killed by the wolf
-LR doesn’t wear a red hood anymore. Now she wears a lovely furry coat!
→ EXAGGERATION:
-The big letters in the script to emphasise the wolf’s angry tone: “BIG TEETH”
-The wolf’s appetite: he is RAVENOUS = very hungry!!
