Lesson 2 – Vivre entre générations

AMERICAN DINER (heading) par MB

INTRODUCTION

I- ORAL sous forme de conversation à partir de 5 images en rapport avec le thème de la séquence.

1-THE RUNAWAY (picture)

What vision of diners does Rockwell’s illustration convey?

a/ The scene takeS place in an American diner: we can see/ there are STOOLS/ A COUNTER/ A COFFEE MACHINE/ A BLACKBOARD WITH THE MENU/ A WAITER…..

b/ We can see a kid/child/boy sitting on a stool, at the counter, next to a police officer. Behind the counter there is the waiter. The 3 of them are speaking/chatting together.

c/ The police officer looks kind-hearted and trustworthy. The waiter, who is listening to them, looks amused and curious. [The 2]BOTH adults look benevolent / caring.
The boy looks childish, shy and innocent.

d/ On the floor, we can notice there is a little bundle on a stick. We can guess that the little boy has run away from his house. Maybe his mum didn’t give him an ice cream for his breakfast or maybe he didn’t want to go to school.

e/ The atmosphere looks COSY* = warm, relaxed, welcoming and friendly, and SAFE. The diner is like a shelter for the little boy who can find protection, attention, and understanding there.
